Be careful what you wish for...

Remember how I said I wanted to know? Well, I sorta found out...

God, I suck. This just proves it.

Dear Sharon,

I am writing to let you know that we have filled the editorial assistant
position. As you know, we were overwhelmed by the volume of interest in
the job and the qualifications of the applicants, and it took us a while
to make a final decision. I wanted to thank you for your interest in the
paper. Your enthusiasm, your experience and your ideas were impressive
(I especially liked the one about Rockaway Beach clubs), and I am going
to keep your materials on file, in case another opportunity which suits
you arises. Please don't hesitate to contact me again if you see any
future job postings here that you wish to pursue.

All best wishes,
The editor from the daily news I interviewed with.

Important way to tell you don't suck: they remembered you, they mention something you suggested which made an impact on them. And it sounds much more positive than the usual 'your details will remain on file' (trans: 'we don't throw anything away, ever'): they are going to keep your materials, and they make it sound like a positive decision.

Please don't take it badly!

I will do my best. :) Thank you muchly for the translation of rejection-speak. It's nice to know that they really did like me and my ideas, and it wasn't me just injecting everything with wishful thinking.
