this would be the part of the movie with the emo music

I'm beginning to wonder if publishing is for me after all. It's been not even a week, and I'm dying to get out of here. DYING. The place is crazy. The work is ridiculous, and the majority of the people I encounter are women between the ages of 38-48 who look, dress, act, walk & talk like they fell out of central casting's call for a modern day victorian schoolmarm. Seriously. If they all started singing 'getting to know you' I would NOT be surprised.

GET ME OUT OF HERE!!

(Catherine, my darling, I don't know how you deal with this kind of thing on a regular basis. Working in children's is enough to drive a person out of their gourd.)

you know, children/ya/teen here at tor is absolutely nothing like that. but i guess that's the benefit of sf/f.

yes, I remember that. But Tor is much better, period. It's more crazy in a fun way than crazy in the fucking ridiculous way. The people there actually love what they're doing. The atmosphere is just so much better. *sigh*

but then again, nothing is perfect, is it?

sounds like some of the editorial people here, but as i'm sure you have gathered, the sales division is much more business-oriented so the people i work with aren't anything like that ... i don't know if it's good or bad!

I laughed so hard about the whole school marm bit, because that is why I didn't want to be an English major anymore - all the girls were wearing Laura Ashley print dresses and here was me. I know, broad generalization, but that was my experience. I know not all English majors are like that! (I know it now, anyhow!).

Don't dispair - it will be ok. At least you are working in your field. I have a Journalism degree and I working in finance!!!!

I'm sorry it sucks, girlie. I wish I could make it better for you

I totally understand that! Just because you love to read and write and talk about what you read and write doesn't mean that you have to be all mouse in the house. (hi. if you DRESS like Emily Dickenson, it doesn't mean that you ARE her. duh...) Laura Ashley...*shudders*

I've come to learn, also, that it's not the field, it's not the company, but it's really the people who you work with. My mom said something interesting about that too. She worked in securities/leasing/finance, and had THE greatest time because she was working with a group of cool people (including my dad, who she met there, and her best friend). But, she said, if you had told her that a finance company was going to be this source of fun, she would have laughed at you.

Still, I appreciate the sentiment! *hugs*
