An exercise in futility

After two hours, FOUR grocery stores, and a farmer’s market I STILL do not have all of the items I need in order to attempt to make a soup recipe I was interested in making. Exasperatingly enough, some of the employees didn’t even know what barley was. I only wish I were kidding. Looks like it will be tuna casserole tonight, even though awesome husband of excellence is going to attempt to find me some instant barley and ground ginger. So perhaps soup might happen, even if in leftover format.

SERIOUSLY?

I never had a problem finding barley, i often found bags of it near the beans and stuff. O_o

I could find *regular* barley, but the Food Network Magazine Cookbook recipe called for "instant" barley, a magical grocery item only apparently found in Brigadoon and on the other side of the rainbow. :P

A friend of mine from college posted this link on Facebook the other day, sort of a cautionary tale about the dangers of putting too much barley in your stew (let's just say it has something in common with baked beans) with a recipe for a "harmless" beef & barley stew that actually sounds pretty good: http://knucklesalad.com/barley-alive/

The recipe was great, and thanks for posting that blog entry - as much as I wish I had an entirely witty, urbane, adult sense of humor, nothing will send me into giggle fits more quickly than jokes about flatulence.
