I read the news today (oh boy).
I feel really smart today. A million dollar bill? *facepalm* Jeez, if you're going to counterfeit, at least do something that's not so blatantly (and laughably) obvious. If the Secret Service had a sense of humor, they'd probably be laughing their asses off about this one.
I can see next season's episode of CSI already.
Geez, lady - if you don't know how to use an Ipod properly, then give it to meee. (wannnntsssssses it, we doessss. give it to usss.)
So much to comment on in the news today -
* Robert Pastorelli, who played Eldin on Murphy Brown (one of my favorite shows ever before the whole idiotic baby storyline) died of an apparent drug overdose yesterday. He was 49. He had some good/great character parts over the years, and I liked him. It's so sad.
* Spalding Gray's body was found and identified. How awful. :( Just goes to show that fame and talent and a fulfilling family life can't make a person happy. *sigh*
* Some guy was found in a teeny studio apartment with SIX MONKEYS, a tarantula, a great dane, and tropical aquarium fish. Animal control was also said to have seized a partridge, which was living in a pear tree. *shakes head* I can understand maybe trying to keep ONE monkey, but SIX?? Geeez.
* Gothamist also had this interesting piece about the latest NYU sucide. I had considered going to NYU but didn't, because I wanted to a) go away to school b) wanted a more college-y college experience.
missgyder went there, so I'm sure she'll weigh in with her five cents at some point about what NYU is like, but this quote sort of summed up the impression that both
zyll and I had when we took a mini-tour of NYU a few years ago, whilst looking at schools.
"At NYU, it's really difficult to make friends. There's no campus life. Everyone is isolated. It can be very lonely."
Granted, making friends at any school is difficult. My first year at Albany wasn't exactly cake, and I'm friends with exactly 3 people I met my first year there (Jeff,
thatgirlinred, and
antheia). I didn't become friends with Carly, Nicole and
quantumchickuntil sophomore year, and I didn't meet the
powerwalkerz or get to know
shackledangeluntil Junior year, along with many of the people I try to keep in touch with. Crazy times. But Beyza talked often about how difficult it was to be a transfer, even when you knew people at the school you were going to. And I guess this girl hung her Felicity-like hopes on this one guy who let her down. I'm only sorry she wasn't strong enough to hold on and keep going. No man is worth throwing yourself off a building. My condolences to her friends & family.
On a slightly lighter note, Breakfast at Tiffany's was on last night and I indulged in the last hour or so. And no, I didn't get all weepy at the end. I didn't. I swear !! oh shaddup. Even so, I was amazed at how much Sex & the City used Breakfast at Tiffany's as a blueprint (which they acknowledged in the 4th season finale "I ♥ NY," in a way) for both the characters and the look of the show. I'm sure that wasn't an accident.
I regained my composure in time to get all weepy at the end of Queer Eye (but if the Fab 5 can get all weepy, then so can I). Hell, even the Beautiful Kyan said, "Oh, shoot me!" at one point during the schmoopfest that was last night. *sigh*

Hope your day is going well. Just wanted to say Hi!
Love ya!
Re: From Mom
Schmoopy = cutesy, romantic behavior. A schmoopfest is a festival of such behavior. See?
(the figure skater wanted to be nice to his wife so they did all sorts of cutesy things for each other and were all hallmarky and cute.)

first of all...I know the new Britney Spears album isn't that great, but thats no reason to bludgeon your boyfriend to death.
and i had NO idea about all the suicides at NYU!
"It sounded like two cars hitting each other at 30 mph. She bounced once."
ew! and you know...i kind of feel bad for not feeling bad about these people. suicide is not the answer. and i find it somewhat cowardly. life is hard. if it were easy it wouldn't be worth holding on to. was that calous?

Really? The suicides were all over the news when they happened, especially the ones at the library.
And no, I don't think it's callous to say that life is worth holding on to, and that the fight is worth it.
For me to go further, I'd have to start quoting Buffy, and nobody wants that to happen.

"Never Kill A Boy On The First Date" was on this morning!

"Cordelia, Owen and I would like to be alone. And for that to happen, you have to go somewhere that's away."
We should seriously discuss having a marathon one of these days. You know, pick a theme and all that. :)

OH! we could do a Top 10 of all time!

aii....
But about the NYU thing. Like any place, it has its advantages and disadvanages. It's hard to make friends. There were times, mostly freshman year, I'd cry myself to sleep. If I had to do it again, I think i'd *glup* join a sorority??
On the other hand, I did get Michelle and Carrie out of it. And the advantage of living in NYC an extra four years--and being totally at ease here when starting out on my own, unlike someone who went to, say, Michigan, and moves here on her own and is just too overwhelmed. NYU can cushion that move, since your parents are still paying for some of it and you have a dorm and whatnot...
Re: aii....
NYC definitely isn't easy...but i also think that you find out right away if its something you can adjust to or not. there definitely is no shame in not being able to make it here.
i moved here after school...5 years ago...i had a friend that lived here, who is still my roommate...other than that I had no job and $500 in pocket.
its definitely easier to make friends if you join a group of some sort. I've made a lot of friends in NYC by playing sports.
i love NYC, but there are still times where a ponder moving back home. Its so much easier there...but the bars close at 2am...i'm sure you can see my dilema. ;)
Re: aii....
I'm sure that there are total advantages to going to NYU, especially since they've purchased a large portion of appealing real estate for their dorms, and you get to have NYC as your 'campus.' I'm not sure what it's like to adjust to living here (since I grew up here), but I have no doubt that what you say is true.
Hell, I went to a school that was all nice and closed into its own campus, and I still had a miserable time adjusting. Being new anywhere is just tough. Throw a broken heart into the mix and you have a recepie for disaster.
