Memory lane and Personal injury.

You know what's better than a weekend?

A GEEKend.

My geek flag is usually flying at a respectable level, but it's never flown so high as this weekend.

Saturday night was spent with [livejournal.com profile] alcestis and [livejournal.com profile] laughingirl at the fantabulous Buffy sing-along. Held at the lovely Waverly IFC Center, this event features a screening of the musical episode, "Once More with Feeling," acted out Rocky-Horror style. Did I mention how fun it was? Because it was tremendous. I agree with [livejournal.com profile] alcestis's observation that it needs better execution, but there's a lot of grand ideas there that need better execution. I participated in Buffy-oke (movieoke, but with a particularly famous scene from "Innocence"). Terrific fun, really. Especially since they also showed the 'debacle of epic proportions' known as the unaired pilot.

Tonight I went over to [livejournal.com profile] antheia's lovely home and watched the WB sign off. I feel old - I've seen a network go from premiere to sign off - TWO, if you count UPN. Seeing the first episodes of Buffy, Angel and Dawson's creek were a trip, though.

Speaking of trips, the reason this post is so disjointed is because I had a massive one today.

I live across the street from Prospect Park. I love rollerblading. It seemed like a good idea to combine the two, particularly today. So, I got all the pieces together, and set off for the park.

A couple of things to keep in mind:
1. I grew up in a part of Brooklyn called Flatlands. I now live in a place called Park Slope. (emphasis mine).
2. My blades are OLD. As in, shitty breaks, Jane-stop-this-crazy-thing old. Which is kind of a non-issue in flat as a pancake Marine Park. Not so much in Prospect Park.
3. I really haven't been on said blades in about 2 years or so.

I put my blades on, put my ipod on, and set off for inside the park. The entry paths are sloped. In that wonderful, San Francisco sort of way. It gave me a nice bit of extra speed at first. The second slope, however, gave too much extra speed, and after a grand total of two minutes blading, I veered off the path and crashed into a tree. (Well, to be accurate, more like I flew off the asphalt and onto the mud, dirt, and roots surrounding a large tree).

I smashed my nose but good. It hurts like a sonofabitch, but not enough to be broken (I'm reasonably sure). I'm a bit scratched on my face (as I did faceplant on a tree). There were, however, several miracles:

1. My glasses, while pretty bent, are not broken or scratched AT ALL. (Don't ask me why I was wearing them instead of my contacts. I have no idea.)

2. Nothing attached to my body broke. Not my nose, nor my arms, ribs, teeth, or neck.

3. Nothing ancillary to my body broke. Ipod? Totally without a scratch or skip. Same with my phone.

4. I was able to pick myself up, dust myself off, put my shoes on and walk home afterwards. I was in a FUCKLOAD of pain, mind you, but still conscious.

I always wondered on my many jaunts through the park why I never saw anyone on rollerblades. Now I know why.

Again, I'd like to thank the Universe for looking out for me. Granted, I would have prefered to not fall at all, but if I needed to be taught some sort of lesson, at least nothing majorly bad befell me. I'll probably look like Joseph Merrick tomorrow, though. If tomorrow wasn't a day that I absolutely had to be at work, I would call in.

(Just because I didn't get to blog at ALL last week doesn't mean I didn't have anything to say. I had a great week, just an extraordinarily busy one. I got to go to a free Yankee game. I managed to get to the gym twice. Good times! Just work was all-consuming, as was exhaustion when I got home. So, not so much with the posting.)

Now? Sleep. I promise more coherence in the future.

What a wonderful reference, I like having smart people on my friend's list =)

I'm sorry that you have injuries, I hope that you recover qucikly and don't suffer much pain in the healing process.

Thanks! :)

(I'm mostly trying to keep the paranoia at bay that I've done some kind of irreparable damage to myself. Which isn't easy when I have to take excedrin for the pain, which tends to make me mighty jittery.)

Excederin makes you jittery or all pain meds? You may want to try aleve I find that it doesn't make me as jumpy when I have a need for ouchy meds.

I'm allergic to naproxin sodium (alleve) and ibuprofen. Both make me sicker instead of better (fevers, vomiting, shakes, other fun stuff). So I'm pretty much stuck to tylenol (brilliant when I have a cold or the flu, useless otherwise), aspirin, and Excedrin (aside from some mild jitters, it makes headaches and all sorts of other bad pains disappear). As long as I remember that I have no good reason to be panicky, I'm usually fine.
*deep, cleansing breath*

Ugh med allergies!!! Thankfully the only one I am allergic to is penicillin.

Well hopefully you'll be all pain free this weekend...if you don't have plans maybe you could me Drew and me for a drink? Metting Jill and I invited Laura. Just a thought.

If not, I'll just meet ya when I move. =)

1) The Buffy sing-along made me very sad that I don't live in New York anymore and didn't really have the time to make a special trip. I'm glad it was enjoyable.

2) Prospect Park is a tough terrain and I'm very sorry you were injured. It's where I learned to roller blade back in the 90's and I assure you, what goes down must come back up. There is a slight incline that starts sometime after Grand Army Plaza and ends right before 9th Street that is just about the hardest thing in the world on skates. So at least you dodged that.

Hopefully you are not too broken this morning.

1) It really was. I'm hoping it'll catch on in other cities, but they're supposed to do it again November 10th & 11th if you'd like to plan ahead!

2)It really, really is rough terrain. It was like going down the bunny slope and then deciding you could ski the black diamond. *shakes head* I'm not going to make that mistake again anytime soon. (I entered the park around 11th street, and there are some fair inclines around there, too. I don't know what I was thinking!!)

Thanks...I'm slightly broken, but I can breathe through my nose, which is a good sign.

1) The WB is GONE *sniff*

2) I feel very old as well, considering I remember the premieres of ALL those shows that they decided to show. I also remember watching them as well. & I know we spoke about this already but WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT KATIE HOLMES + TOM CRUISE back then?! Like, nobody. I wonder why they didn't put in Felecity in addition to all the other shows?

3) I think until you can get the brakes fixed on your blades it would be safer to go bike riding in Prospect Park. Because really I like your face & wouldn't want you to break it. Otherwise go with someone who has good breaks so that maybe you'll be able to stop one another. :D

I went to the Buffy sing-along on Friday night. I didn't participate in the Buffyoke, but it was much fun nonetheless.

Sorry about your injuries.

Those things are evil... they scare the Lenni... .-.

You're right about the WB thing. They gave me Buffy, they gave me Gilmore Girls (until the show started to irk me so much I couldn't watch anymore) and they gave me Winchesters. Bye, Michigan J. Frog. Thanks. :)

UPN only gave me Veronica Mars :b

CW inherits VM and SPN only by default and based on how their marketing is targeted, I don't suspect they'll give me anything else. We'll see.
