John didn’t get it until it was all over, but the yellow-eyed demon knew all along.John was a warrior. He wasn’t an easy man to get to. You could hit him with anything – even a truck – and he’d get up and run right back at you. He was practically unstoppable. Even when the demon was inspired to go after his friends, John shook it off. When the battle was over, he’d weep for the fallen, but for now, he’d fight. His armor was impenetrable.

Almost. There was one weakness. Two, if you wanted to get specific.

Dean and Sam.

Title: No Scent

Now was not the time to be afraid.

After all the things he’d been through, death was nothing to be afraid of. Hell would be a tropical vacation. John couldn’t remember the last time he’d gotten a tan; probably when he was working construction.

Demons were like dogs – both could smell fear. Unlike dogs, demons (or this particular demon) relished the scent of it. John wouldn’t give him the pleasure. His mind was clear on why he was there.

Better me than Dean, he thought. There was nothing to be afraid of. He’d protected the boys. He’d won this round.


I forgot how much I missed writing these things. They're so much fun!
