I'm well familiar with the expression 'burning the candle at both ends." My mother throws it at me on a regular basis, saying that its something I do far too often. I usually don't agree.
And then there are times when I think I'm burning the candle from both ends AND the middle. Like now.
Thank all the necessary ruling powers that I have Friday off. Because I'm going to sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep. I'm going to close the blinds as tightly as possible, unplug the phone, and sleep. I just have to get to then.
quasisonic is trying to get me to go to bellydancing with her on Thursday. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to stand upright by then, but we'll see.
Last night's concert was pretty great. We got to the wrong end of the setup as Guster was starting (argh) but made it in by the 3rd song. Central Park is SO annoying - you have to hike all over creation to get to the entrance they want you to use. Urgh. I'm definitely going to be using
trebleahead's route to/from 68th street from now on. If I can remember it...I usually hate going into Central park because I get lost so easily. There are no signs, no way to direct yourself, even when you STAY on the paths. My sense of direction is fine just as long as I'm not in the wildnerness. Someone recently asked me how I could tell east from west, and my reply was: "Well, East is Madison, Park, Lex, etc. West is Broadway, 7th, 8th, Amsterdam, and so on." They replied with a blank stare. New York geography is not elsewhere geography. At home, it's tied to a neighborhood (Mill Basin, Coney Island, the Slope, etc).
But I digress. Guster was very good, but the gulf between the songs on Lost & Gone Forever and the ones on Keep it Together was even more visible in concert (Lost being the better of the two). Rufus Wainwright was okay, but I wasn't impressed. He did play "Complaint de la Butte" (his contribution to the Moulin Rouge soundtrack, which delighted me, as that's one of my favorite tracks on the soundtrack album not by the cast. I've never cared for his version of "Hallelujah." (If you don't know who Jeff Buckley is and you think Rufus is teh best evar omg go and find yourself a copy of Grace. NOW.) Ben was marvelous as usual, even though the Bowery show will be impossible to equal, imho. He really needs to record the song he wrote for his daughter, it's just beyond sweet. The highlights of Ben's set was when he brought out Rufus Wainwright for a marvelous duet of "Careless Whisper," and when Guster came out at the end to perform "Steven's last night in town," "Fair" and one my advanced age won't let me remember. Guster & Ben Folds need to do an album together as soon as possible.
EDIT:
trebleahead emailed in with this tidbit:
The song that you, in your advanced age, couldn't remember that closed the show with Ben and Guster performing together was "Not the Same" with it's 3 part harmonies being performed by Guster and the audience.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled work day, already in progress. ;)
Riiiight!!
Being at Summerstage reminds me of the things I like about that venue (nice area of the park, good bands, good sightlines, relatively cheap food, ending at exactly 10pm) and the things I absolutely hate (troves and troves of snotty teenagers whose outfits cost more than half of my closet put together who don't care about anything at all except looking cool in front of their friends, and who talk and smoke through the whole thing like they couldn't even been bothered, because their daddies sponsored the whole thing and they get in for free. me? jealous? Never. )
Tonight I'm making an appearance at the Central Park Boathouse Work Thing to spend time with Subrights Leah,
missgyder, Amy, and
velvetxgrl (if she's going) and possibly Boss L as well. I'm a bit excited, as I've never been to the boathouse before. Mostly I'm going to see the girls for awhile, grab some free food and drink and then hightail it down to
alcestis's birthday extravaganza.
Please God, let there be cabs tonight. This is one time where I think springing for a cab will be money well spent.
