Yesterday
j_bkl and I went on an adventure. Now, granted, we'd already had a decent weekend up until this point.
The Good: Catching
missgyder's critically-acclaimed play, and then catching up with G herself until the wee hours of Friday.
(Also notable on Friday was getting to have an in-person hangout with
physedluver, which I had not gotten to do in more years than I am comfortable in admitting. We toured MOMA after a lovely lunch, and I am happy to say that while she was an intelligent, witty, and all-around awesome person in high school, she is now an EVEN MORE intelligent, witty, and all-around awesome person as an adult. I am so pleased we got to spend some time catching up, and hope to so again very soon!)
The Bad: Nursing my poor sweetie through a rotten migraine through most of Saturday.
Anyway, J has a friend named A. Among other things, A is an accomplished horsewoman. She's been riding for years, knows both English and Western styles, and is (at least by my own estimation), an expert. So when she called up J and asked if we'd like to go horseback riding, I jumped at the chance. Before long, we were driving out to Deliverance, NJ, and paying our $15. See, when I heard the words "horse farm," I was expecting a fancy English stable like you usually see on tv. This was a horse farm. You pay your money, they hand you a horse. If you ask nicely, they'll help you on the horse. Otherwise, that's all. There's a sign that says "Ride at Own Risk," barn cats, mud, and lots of green country to ride around on.
See, I was under the impression we'd be going on a trail ride, with staff and helmets and the whole deal. Nope! A said that this wasn't going to be a "grown up pony ride" by any means. And it wasn't. I learned how to sit in the saddle, how to hold the reins, and (after awhile) how to convince the horse to go when I told it to and where I told it to. We didn't ride around fast, but we did ride around, and though I didn't get much faster than a slow trot, it was a lot different than the "ride" I had at Rocking Horse Ranch on my JHS class government trip.
As for my horse, Autmn had a mind of her own. She was pretty sassy, and at first really had no interest in doing what I told her to. However, after one point where I had to wait for J and A to return (I'll let him tell you that part), I managed to mostly make her stand still, turn around, and such. After that, she listened to me a lot more. In fact, the more I spoke to her, the more she listened. Pretty soon, I was able to direct her around trees that were in the path and everything. She still was pretty stubborn on occasion - she hated her cool down walk so much that A had to take over. Still, the riding part was awesome. Well, except for the (no lie) 50 or so insect bites I seem to have on my person right now. And yes, yes I used bug spray. I didn't know I'd have to spray my face, and hair, and every single part of me not covered by denim, but I sprayed, darnit. (who gets insect bites on their face? IN THEIR HAIR? WHO besides me? I mean it!)
I enjoyed my sojurn, but there's nothing like a trip to the country to remind me just HOW MUCH of a city girl I am. I was delighted to be back in the city last night, even mor delighted to get prettied up and watch the season premiere of Mad Men with
teany and
selftoken while sipping gimlets and wearing pearls. As fun as it was to try something new, it was even more fun to slip into something older and more familiar.
And now back towork itching work itching work.
(seekrit message to
firynze: got your email, need to give it more brain. But I will get back to you soonly, I swear.)
