God, I suck. This just proves it.


Dear Sharon,

I am writing to let you know that we have filled the editorial assistant
position. As you know, we were overwhelmed by the volume of interest in
the job and the qualifications of the applicants, and it took us a while

God, I suck. This just proves it.

No, darling, it means that you are wonderful, you just weren't quite the wonderful they were looking for. How can you get suckage from that letter? I mean, i know people are rarely harsh in rejection letters, but it sounds like even they know you're wonderful. Regardless, i know you're wonderful. Do i need to bring chocolate chip cookies when i come visit?

Important way to tell you don't suck: they remembered you, they mention something you suggested which made an impact on them. And it sounds much more positive than the usual 'your details will remain on file' (trans: 'we don't throw anything away, ever'): they are going to keep your materials, and they make it sound like a positive decision.

It sounds like you made a good impression. Everyone else has explained the letter well enough. Shar, don't give up just yet. You have great credentials, but you're in a competitive field in a competitive city. Success won't be instant, but it will be yours. A lot of people have faith in you, including me. As trite as it sounds, it's true. Don't shortchange yourself. Someone is sure to recognize your skills and potential one of these days. In the meantime, why not find something to make your applications look better? Since my field isn't yours, I have no idea what that might be, but I know that when people get rejected from med school, they're told to improve how they look on paper. I hope it's a possibility for you, and that you give it a shot.
