I went camping yesterday!!
Done fainting?
Well, my version of it anyway. I came home at about 6:30 and Laura told me that
angelicillusion had called and said that her and her parents had extra ABBA show tickets and did I want to go. She was so breathless that for a split second I had an inward squee about the possibility that I was leaving imminently to see Mamma Mia!, but after further inquiry, it was found that an ABBA coverband was going to be giving a free concert at the Coney Island Bandshell that night, and since her dad works for one of the sponsors, we could get nice little VIP seats. (Otherwise it's bring yr own chair or sit on the lawn). I figured, what the hell? It was a beautiful night, I hadn't seen Kathy in awhile and her parents have known me since I was missing front teeth and regarded Reading Rainbow as in-depth literary criticism. So it was a nice, no pressure evening. :D
The band was okay. They boasted about having 'original members,' and Kathy's dad asked me which of the 4 I thought were back. I told him that Benny and Bjorn were probably too busy counting their money, and that Agnetha(sp?) and Frida couldn't be bothered. I was right - it was the original drummer and bassist from their touring act, and even THEY only did about 5 songs. But the tributers did a credible job, though I could have lived without hearing "Does Your Mother Know", "Summer Night City", AND "He is your brother"; I know the girls need a break but the only solo of Bjorn's I've ever liked is the bridge he sings in "Honey Honey." They did "Ring Ring" in Swedish, didn't do "One of Us" or "Lay All Your Love on Me," but they did do "Gimme Gimme Gimme" (which got a much bigger reaction than I expected, as did "Chiquitita") AND they did "The Name of the Game." I was delighted, I don't think there were more than 3 other people in the couple thousand that showed up that even knew the song, let alone liked it though. A middle school (ages 11-14 for you international readers) choir was brought on for "I have a dream" (duh) and "Thank You for the Music" (nice!) Plus, the singers were backed by a large band & orchestra, so even in the few spots where they weren't quite ABBA standard, at least the music was.
But OH, the camp. I could see the blue eyeshadow from where I sat, and it was pretty far back. The white satin outfits. Then the kitty cat minidresses, the wolf and rabbit minidresses, with the HIGH boots. The HUGE poncho (for Eagle, Voulez Vouz, etc). They had the moves down, and this random guy was narrating the whole 'story of ABBA' at different points of the show. Great big fun.
