So, after a night of couch lounging, tv, a good dinner and about 8 hours of sleep, I'm back to my old self again. Unfortunately, in order to do this I had to miss last night's trivia extravaganza, as hosted by
blergeatkitty &
tacologic. And apparently I missed a lot, because there's now a poll in
tacologic's journal that's trying to determine if Don Henley is lamer than Phil Collins or vice versa.
Now, I'm not trying to skewer the vote or incur
blergeatkitty's wrath here, but I voted for Henley as the lamer party. And why did I do so? Lemme summup:
My mom loved Phil Collins. All through the 80s and early 90s, you could pretty much guarantee that there would be a Genesis tape in the car if she was driving. For awhile they annoyed me, but after awhile, I started to like them. I defy anyone to not fall victim to the sunny bounce of "Invisible Touch" or listen to "Land of Confusion" (or see its extremely cool video) without singing along with the chorus. "Throwing it all away" is one of my favorites, as is the sarcastic, sneering "Jesus He Knows Me." I still get a little sad for the narrator of "No Son of Mine" (which I'm pretty sure was autobiographical.) And that's just the stuff he did with Genesis - most of my favorites of his were solo: "In the air tonight" , "I wish it would rain down," "Sussudio," "Something Happened on the Way to Heaven," (though that one was played to death when it was released), "Billy don't you lose my number" and my #1-all-time favorite, something I'm pretty sure that
zyll & I will karaoke one day, his duet with Earth Wind & Fire's Phillip Bailey, "Easy Lover."
Henley had some good songs with the Eagles and solo (well, three - "Boys of Summer," "End of the Innocence," and the duet he did with Patty Smyth). I personally find it difficult to quantify Henley's contribution to the Eagles, as most of the songs of theirs that I like are actually by Glenn Frey.
In the 1980s, when videos were king, Collins/Genesis made quite a few spectacular videos. Henley made one that was kind of okay.
Now, this kind of confession is not the kind of thing that people will understand, I'm sure. Collins vs. Henley is a lifestyle choice, and not one that I took on lightly. But there's a higher chance of me getting annoyed by a Don Henley/Eagles song and changing the station than there is for me to do it with a Collins/Genesis track. So I simply accepted my fate.
And somewhere, my mom is doing a victory dance, I'm sure.
