See Dreamgirls. As SOON as you can.

I went to the Ziegfeld tonight with Meg and [livejournal.com profile] leopard_lady. In an audience that could have been hand-picked, I was absolutely blown out of my seat. People were applauding, screaming, singing, cheering - it was almost as if we were seeing a live production. It was electrifying. It was so good, I actually want to see it again. In the theater. And soon. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a movie this much. Beyonce was very good, even though Jennifer Hudson blew her off the damn screen. "And I am telling you I'm not going" is one of the best musical breakdowns since "Rose's turn" at the end of Gypsy. And the rest of the music is so catchy, so very good, I can't believe this musical has been flying under my radar for so long.

Really. If you like musicals, or music, or are a music history nerd who might get a huge kick out of watching the comparisons between the Dreams and the Supremes, see it. Really. It's a beautiful film besides, and worth every fraction of the $11 (yes. ELEVEN! Dollars!) it cost to see it on the big screen. Condon was obviously a fan of the original Dreamgirls. It shows.

(I so wish I could sing as well as Jennifer Hudson. I told Meg & Jill tonight that I was considering taking back some of the bad things I've said about American Idol in the past. Meg told me not to. "She got kicked off!" She told me, so apparently I'm still allowed to hate that show. )

And now I'm going to head to bed, possibly showering first.
