Last night I had one of those moments where I not only reconnected with something from my childhood, I also discovered what a profound impact it had on shaping me as an adult individual.

Last night, I saw Murphy Brown for the first time in years. Disc 1 of Season 1 came from Netflix.

And yes, I know that Nick at Nite had been running it for awhile, but it was always on extremely late, and usually the later, crappier episodes. This is Murphy in her full, first season glory. And damn, is she ever glorious.

I was a wee tyke (about 7 or 8 or so) when Murphy Brown first hit the airwaves. After seeing an episode or two, I used to beg and plead with my parents to let me stay up an extra half hour past my 9pm bedtime to watch it. I didn't always get all of the jokes, but I knew there was something special about Murphy, something that struck a chord with young me. She was beautiful, she was powerful, successful, and smart. She was also snarky as all get out, and heaven help you if you crossed her. My mom never had a problem with me watching Murphy, as she was just another in a long line of strong women I watched in tv while growing up. (I once commented to my mother about all of the strong female role models I had as a child, like Miss Piggy, Wonder Woman, She-Ra, the Bionic Woman, and how great it was. Her reply? "Do you think that was an accident?!" hee.) Murphy was a complete and unrepentant smart ass, and at that age, I was on the fence. Granted, much of my smartassness wasn't exactly discouraged growing up, especially since I was being raised by two of them. I was discouraged from being completely unkind or disrespectful of genuine authority figures. Bullshit authority figures were another matter ( e.g. - cops, you respected. Parking ticket dispensers? Not so much.) Murphy was the same. She wasn't a bad person, and would occasionally have attacks of conscience that grudgingly caused her to do the so-called 'right thing.' I have four more episodes to experience, and I'm so very excited about it. But I am honestly shocked about how much of an impact she had on me - and not just by planting the seed of being a journalist in my head - but that it's okay to be a ball-busting hard case (with the talent to back it up) if you do so with finesse, a smile, and a good dose of humor (even if its at your own expense), and that you shouldn't suffer anyone's bullshit with a smile unless you want to. It also gave me a taste for the news when its marinated in snark. Ah, memories.

Now, back to that work stuff. Le sigh. Kudos to [livejournal.com profile] antheia for offering to make me a new Bones icon, because she just rocks that hard.

(also - a few notes on Pandora: "Keep on Rising" by Bent Fabric made me feel like I was in a montage of workplace events to show how confident and and awesome I am at my job. I'm going to find a copy of it and keep it around when I need inspiration. And, a band called The Academy Is.. has a song called Black Mamba).

And, Felicitates de Cinco de Mayo!!! Yo quiero mas cervezas y mucho margaritas.

Um. YAH! I so heart that show!

Who do you like better: Emily or Zooey Deschanel?

You know? I don't know. They're so different, I like them entirely on their own merits. Emily gets a slight edge because I've been enjoying Bones so much, but Zooey has a way of stealing movies (Almost Famous, Big Trouble, and The Good Girl all come to mind).

I'd love to see them do a movie TOGETHER.

I think i might agree with you.

Though i am interested in seeing Emily in this: Mute

Mostly because she's in it i think.

Also, as i just realized that i'm not even two weeks older than Emily. Kind of weird. We're both Libras! Hee!

The line forms here for adoption applications. --->

My mom is awesome. She was also the first woman in her office to wear pants back in the 70s! She worked for the President of the company when skirts were expected. It was winter, it was freezing, and she was tired of suffering, and she had this REALLY nice pantsuit. So she wore it! And her boss (who adored and respected her) called her a "damn women's libber" but allowed it after she gave him an argument.

No one had the balls to wear pants before her, but you better believe that they all wore them after that!!

:D Mine, too!

(Although my Dad is pretty rocking, also. He's always saying, "Strong women are always more interesting!")
