Do you need a new hairdresser? Mine is da bomb. She's been excellent with my hair at many different levels of shortness (and in fact she's the one who did the Big Chop in teh first place). She's also pretty cheap for NYC standards - $45 a cut.
Speaking as a person who always hated the way I looked for years and years (and is now more or less okay with looking like this), you can knock yourself out of a rut a few different ways. Make a drastic change or make an extra effort are two particular good ones. Hair's an easy place to go with that, but I find that when I make any sort of extra effort with my appearance whatsoever, that's a good day in lots of unmeasurable ways.
Also, boyfriends don't necessarily equal validation. If I had to rely on my boyfriend to tell me I was pretty, I'd be in pretty sorry shape right now. It's been at least four months since he's made any comment about my looks while I'm wearing clothing. "Surely girl not need Kip to say girl pretty. Kip let girl into cave. Kip like when girl is naked. That proof enough. Why girl sad?" You have to get your best validation from yourself no matter who you are or aren't involved with, which you are now realizing.
Though speaking of Kip, we have embarked on a project that he thinks will be helpful to you in the long run in this general department. I will share the results with you this weekend after we finish.
