Some time back, I joined a facebook group dedicated to the organization and planning of my school's Ten-Year HS reunion. I don't know why I did. I was in Vegas at the time and feeling festive. Or maybe I felt sympathy - they were a few people shy of the minimum members of the group needed for one to be organized. So I joined. And got 12 friend requests within 2 days. ( Seriously. I didn't think I was popular in HS, but apparently I was wrong).

Now, it's the moment of truth. An actual reunion has been planned for the Class of 1998 for November 1. It's on a boat. This is ironic, as our class was the one who claimed so bitterly about the prom being on a boat that it was moved forevermore to the Brooklyn Marriott the following year. [livejournal.com profile] j_bkl thinks it sounds fun and thinks we should go. I have no idea. I'm thinking of sending a Facebook message to see who else is spending the $31 on this thing (and making sure it's open bar, even though I'm fairly sure it is).

So, I figured I'd put up a poll. Why make your own decisions when you can farm them off to a committee?

I answered in the theoretical; in actuality, I've got another year or two before I have to face the same quandary...

Theoretical is fine, as long as it's honest!

(and if this were a JHS reunion of some kind, I'd select the rabid raccoon option as well. But HS was less bad.)

High school was definitely a rabid raccoon period for me. But I suspect I might go to my reunion anyway, just to sort of show off how I've turned out. And to mock the people who always mocked me...

Well, for a thoroughly satisfying high school reunion experience in your case, I suggest the following:

Prepare a nice meal.
Open a good bottle of wine or spirits of your choosing.
Rent Grosse Pointe Blank and Romy & Michele's High School Reunion
Enjoy, and save the gas!

Second. Though I think I'd use Grosse Pointe Blank as the nightcap.

2006 would have been 10 years for me and it was only this summer when I went 'omg, I graduated from HS 10 years ago!' Oddly, I've had a lot of HS people friending me on facebook, people I never really liked. Also, my mom sometimes has student teachers or parents of her students who are people I went to high school with and they have these memories of me. And I'm like, who the hell are these people?

We totally escaped our reunion. The price was ridiculously high, so a lot of our friends couldn't come. They just went and hung out at the hotel bar and we escaped the ballroom that the reunion was in and hung out in the hotel bar. It was way awesome.

I had a great time and I'd do it again. It was really great seeing friends again. But my high school experience was pretty great and I have fond memories, so.

my 15 year reunion is 2 years away, people are starting to gas on and on about how great it will be. Can I borrow that rabid raccoon to be my date? If I actually get an invite. I was rather caustic on the original one - via classmates.com

I picked "yes, and mine was awful", but it wasn't, not really. My 10th high school reunion wasn't awesome, but that had at least a little to do with me and my issues at the time and not the gathering itself. Regardless, my reunion featured an open bar... but as I had to drive (hello, suburban Vermont!), I couldn't take full advantage. Fooey.

As far as I'm aware, there was no 15th reunion last year. Good. :)

... It's on a boat? Again? WHY?? Am I the only one who remembers how GOD AWFUL prom was? We were stuck on the Hudson with a bunch of people who all wanted to get off as much as I did. Why the HELL would they put it on a boat? I mean if it were at a bar or some hotel I MIGHT consider ... but a boat? No, just no ...

Had blasts, multiple.

I've hit my High School and College 10 year reunions, and honestly both were pretty cool.

First, the sucky.

Sucky moments at the High School Reunion:
- no mixed drinks. We're a North Jersey Prep School, and they couldn't have a fricking bottle of gin, bottle of tonic, ice, and limes? Come on, we have standards to uphold.
- Teachers who I dug barely remembering me, or remembering and not caring.

Sucky moments at College
- Alumni relations totally screwing the class of 93 out of events, because they didn't want to remind the older classes that their colleges had been absorbed into the behemoth of Case Western
- Our dinner was in a sports bar that I never heard of or went to in my 4 years there. Cleveland has some amazing food, and they send us to a wings joint?
- - Teachers who I dug barely remembering me, or remembering and not caring.

In both cases, I caught up with some people, got to roll around the old digs, and found I was no where near as old as a lot of people in my class where.

Think about it, it will make sense.

Folks, I understand if you hated your high school and everyone in it, you may not want to go back unless you can flash your way cool life/middle finger. And yeah, there will be cheese galore. But go.

Anyone afraid to to face and enjoy their past, is even more afraid to face and enjoy their future.
