So, a friend I'm recently back in touch with sent me a facebook invitation for my high school's 35th anniversary party next November.  Nice. I remember reading about the 20th anniversary they held back in the day, so I looked at the details of the event.

The geniuses in charge of this one want RSVPs at the END OF FEBRUARY.   And that's not even the best part.

It's on a Thursday Night.
It's $100.
IT'S ON STATEN ISLAND.

Now, I grew up in Brooklyn, and my high school was in Brooklyn.  And I'm not the only one who balked at the choice of venue.  The organizers said something about it being because it'd be "the best bang for the buck," and how it's not that inconvenient to get to, and that it'll be "totally worth it" because of all the old friends you'll see.

I guess when you hit a certain age, you assume that everyone owns a car.   I am happy to say that I don't.  I am also proud of the fact that I literally can not remember the last time I was on Staten Island for any reason, and this is not a trend that I intend to break anytime soon.   Also, I sincerely doubt that these people looked hard enough or long enough, if the best that they believed that they could do was the Staten Island Hilton Garden Inn.  This is about a dumb as a midnight boat cruise.  Staten Island.  STATEN ISLAND.  They're high.   (But knowing my high school, that's almost fitting.)

Could the last time you were on Staten Island have been when we drove through it to come home during the transit strike?

[WAAALLLL-EEEEE!]

I was trying to think of a time when I actually got out of the car in Staten Island, and I couldn't think of one.

How can anyone in New York assume everyone has a car? I don't even have a license.

I have no idea. I think if some people have a car, they assume that EVERYONE has a car.

uh I have a car & don't assume that everyone has a vehicle ... & I def would have put it in Staten Island regardless ... the tolls alone back and forth ... its not economical and simply doesn't make any kind of sense to have it out there. I mean duh BROOKLYN HIGH SCHOOL ... seriously I think the Murrow people putting this thing together have been smoking too much bud ...

Why can't they just have it at the school? The reunions are probably hosted at lame catering halls all the time.

The problem with that is that there's really no gathering space at Murrow that would be conducive to such a party. Even the cafeteria (aside from disgusting) is relatively small. Plus, there's probably some bullshit "liability issue" or whatever.

i think the best part is the piling on of abuse in the comments. maybe the pressure will make them change it? not that i'd go anyway. oy.

I have no idea, but the abuse is really building up, isn't it??

The organizer who keeps responding said that the venue is booked and they're not changing it and so there. And they claim that they checked out all sorts of places, but I kind of doubt that.

I'm not going to go either. My curiosity was squished at "Staten Island."
