I've been the New Guy, most recently with Creative Writing, and I think you're right to be wary. This semester's Creative Writing students are getting more of their money's worth because, while I meant well in the Spring, I got thrown into the class and Did Not Know What I Was Doing. This semester is better, but I'm still learning. The Spring 2010 students will get even more of their money's worth.
Sadly, though, most students seems to want the New Guy, the Incompetent Guy, or the Guy Who Doesn't Care. They see it as paying for the degree, not paying to learn things. :(
Maybe this guy did just have the jitters, and he'll be better next week. I hope so!
