American Beauty is a movie "full of hope"? I mean, yeah, it has some really cool parts about being aware of the beauty in the world, but "dark" and "painful" and "intense" are words that come to mind way before "hope" for this amazing movie.

I like my result. And it makes me even more want to read the book (I checked it back in a few days ago but it was going to another library and we don't have a copy. Must remember to put in a request for it at work tomorrow).

you're the virgin suicides. you're sad but pretty, and very, very dreamy.

the movie is good. the book is that much better. The film of the virgin suicides is a great compliment to the book - you might want to see it while you're waiting for the book to come in. Or not. I didn't feel either ruined the other.

I found american beauty hopeful in that it's possible to get out of a bad situation in your life, albeit temporarily, and be the kind of person you want to be. I found it uplifting when Lester told off the people who were bringing him down, and found out what it was like to really LIVE. I could go on all day, but anyway...

Well the book arrived only 2 days after i requested it -- woo hoo! -- so i'll be reading it this weekend and will be requesting the movie within the next couple of weeks.

Okay, that makes sense. You make really good points.

Enjoy the book! It's written so beautifully that it actually can be enjoyed, despite the subject matter. I tried to read it at 13 and didn't get it. (It got a rave review in Sassy. I couldn't resist.) I tried again at 20 and I could NOT put it down. I'm interested to see what you think of it.

and thank you. I try very hard to argue my side effectively. My parents did everything they could to show me that. :D
