Today was my Uncle Charlie's birthday. He would have been 82 today. I didn't get a chance to go over to St. Patrick's to light a candle (and I'm sure he would have been more concerned about my throat and me being out in the cold), but I'm going to light a little candle here in my lj, in his memory. ::lights::
One of the messenger guys passed by a short while ago, and asked me if it was okay for him to take one of the copies of the DMX autobiography out of the freebie bin. He was so sweet I damn near melted. aww. It always makes me warm & squishy inside when someone gets really excited about a book. :)
I wanted a non-cranky way to start out this post. Nothing new on the health front, except that instead of sounding like Patty or Selma, I sound more like Marge. >< Swallowing is still unfun, but have discovered that I can max out my pain centers and eat. Only drawback is that it makes you tired. Which I am.
I also dug out an old mix that Nicole made for me for Christmas my senior year of college. It's a really fantastic mix, and it brought back all sorts of good memories. But the memories were drowned out by the loud shouting of a voice in my head that said CALL OR EMAIL NICOLE THIS INSTANT, YOU SELF-INVOLVED GIT! I've been horrid about phone and email the last month or so ("just this last month?"
pizanite asks with a chuckle), which is very very bad. I also need to get my shit together as I have THREE birthdays coming up: Amy is March 30,
whtegrlwthehair is April 2, and Nicole is April 11!! Wait, check that - I have FOUR - Marisa's birthday is April 16th. Wow. Busy busy me! Although I'm not fully celebrating Amy's birthday, as she,
missgyder and Michelle are going SKYDIVING. I told them to have a lovely time jumping out of an airplane and take lots of pictures, while I stay on the nice, solid ground. We loveses the ground, we does. *clings*
Oh, crap. I forgot it's tuesday! I have to do payments!! *runs away*

What's the last thing you ate? Chicken Pot Pie soup (don't ask me, ask progresso), bologna sandwich (with great effort), and applesauce.
What's your favourite cheese? mozzarella, munster, monterey jack, feta, goat, sliced yellow american, and gouda. Honestly, I have yet to meet a cheese I didn't like...
What's your favourite fish? Salmon. I could eat it 3x a day.
What's your favourite fruit? Strawberries, grapes, pineapple, peaches, pears, mango, black cherries
When, if ever, did you start liking olives? Where it began, I can't begin to know when, but I know it's going strong. I still only like green ones if they're pimento and at the bottom of a vodka martini, but any black or greek olives are my friend.
When, if ever, did you start liking beer? Probably college, or whenever it was that I first tried Killian's.
When, if ever, did you start liking shellfish? I was older, probably 11 or 12. I'd been scared off for ages after only trying shrimp, but then discovered scallops and fell in love.
What was the best thing your mum/dad/guardian used to make?
My mom is an EXCELLENT cook. Amazing, really. Every year we get to pick a birthday meal, so this is my usual one:
Pork chops, spinach pie, and kasha vanishkas (hold the onions). She also makes the best tomato and pesto sauces you've ever had.
My dad deserves props as THE go-to breakfast guy. Seriously - eggs, pancakes, selecting a good piece of whitefish, lox or baked salmon - this man can do no wrong!
What's the native specialty of your home town? Well, I'm from Brooklyn, so it depends on if you're dealing with reality or the marvelous fantasy Brooklyn. Hm. Nathan's got its start in Coney Island, and I defy you to find better Pizza anywhere else - bad Brooklyn pizza is usually 10x better than most "NY Style" pizza you get elsewhere in the country. I've always been a big fan of the chinese food here, too.
What's your comfort food? cheeseburger deluxe (medium) ginger ale. Or wonton soup, fried dumplings (meat & veg), spring roll, fried wontons, spare ribs, cold sesame noodles, and eggplant in garlic sauce. Or pasta. Or matzoh ball soup and a pastrami sandwich. You can never tell with me.
What's your favourite type of chocolate? Cadbury mini-eggs. M&M, eat your heart out.
How do you like your steak? Juicy and tender.
How do you like your burger? with yellow american cheese (don't bring that white shit over here). Brown on the outside, pink and warm in the middle (I agree with
blergeatkitty on that one), on a plate with fries & onion rings.
How do you like your eggs? scrambled, scrambled on a roll with butter, bacon & cheese, or hard boiled with matzoh on the side.
How do you like your potatoes? FRIED. Extra crunchy.
How do you take your coffee? I don't. Not anymore, anyway...
How do you take your tea? depends on the tea - if it's green, chinese, spice, or herbal, then plain or a small bit of sugar. If it's a black tea (like English or Irish Breakfast) then milk & sugar. Sometimes I'll have earl grey that way or plain, depending on my mood.
What's your favourite mug? My Buffy, the Vampire Slayer one, of course!
What's your biscuit or cookie of choice? home-made chocolate chip cookies. Preferably warm.
also: Girl Scout Samoas, Social Tea Biscuits (esp. in tea), and Keebler's Fudge Stripe.
What's your ideal breakfast? Depends on the day. Either pancakes, sausage, tea & orange juice, or scrambled eggs, bacon, home fries, oj, tea & toast.
What's your ideal sandwich? fresh mozzarella, basil, tomato, and pesto on a baugette. I miss the ones from Bountiful Bread in Stuyvesant Plaza.
What's your ideal pizza (topping and base)? Original II's Original Supreme - square or round, doesn't matter. Amazing. If I can't have that, then pepperoni & mushroom.
What's your ideal pie (sweet or savory)? sweet potato or apple for sweet, spinach for savory.
What's your ideal salad? Wild mixed greens, goat or mozzarella cheese, lots of tomatoes, nuts, good dressing. Dressing can make or break a salad, imho.
What food do you always like to have in the fridge? cheese, leftovers, lemon-lime canada dry seltzer, hebrew national salami, fruit and vegetables.
What food do you always like to have in the freezer? chicken nuggets of some kind. Ice cream. rolls and bagels from local stores, frozen for freshness, ready to be microwaved & toasted.
What food do you always like to have in the cupboard? Crispix, pringles, cans of soup, canned whole tomatoes for sauce, good olive oil, barley for kasha, pasta.
What spices can you not live without? basil, oregano, parsley, rosemary, mint, thyme, cinnamon, salt, pepper.
What sauces can you not live without? Home-made marinara, pesto, barbeque.
Where do you buy most of your food? Well, when I ran the kitchen, supermarkets.
How often do you go food shopping? Um...well...whenever I could.
What's the most you've spent on a single food item? Don't quite remember, but I'm sure it was worth it.
What's the most expensive piece of kitchen equipment you own (excluding 'white goods')? Most of my stuff is hand-me-down, but I plan on changing that as soon as I move out.
What's the last piece of equipment you bought for your kitchen? I don't remember. A wooden spoon, maybe?
What piece of kitchen equipment could you not live without? A sauce pot and a good frying pan.
How many times a week/month do you cook from raw ingredients? not nearly often enough

Wendy's. Classic double or triple with cheese, no onions. Fries, soda, side of nuggets. mmmmmmm.
