offbalance: (Bones - Smarter than You)
[personal profile] offbalance
I'm not going to even get into the giant crapcake today has been at work.

Instead, I'd like to rant for a moment on something that genuinely bothers me, possibly more than it should.

Why do people constantly mix these three things up?

They're = they are
their = possessive (their book)
there = place (sit over there)

Really? Is it THAT hard? The apostrophe indicates a contraction which indicates two words, which means it's referring to they are. I can understand that it's/its is tricky, but these three should be as obvious as to/too/two (although I sometimes see those mixed up as well). I'm not asking for anything really hard, like the proper use of punctuation, either. Then again, I've also seen someone mix up do and due lately, which nearly made my grammar-loving brain short out.

In this day and age of built-in spell checkers, how hard is it to watch spelling mistakes? I have my own specific problem words, gorgeous being a big one (I always misplace the E) and a few others that I'm not remembering. I think everyone should know that there is no "a" in definitely. That's just how I feel on the matter. If a word looks wrong to me? I check it. BECAUSE I CAN. This is a brave new age of the internet, people! Geocities is dead! If you're only representing yourself through text, you'd better believe that certain people are going to mock you, and hard, for easily checkable mistakes.

Enough of that, I have a salt mine to get back to.
