It happened again last night.

[livejournal.com profile] quasisonic and I opted to head home after dinner with our friend Amy, since Laura wasn't really feeling well. While waiting on the Union Square platform for the Q I heard someone call my name. When I turned around, I found out that the voice was attached to one of my very best friends in JHS, Mary.

Mary was the coolest girl I knew back then. She had an older brother who was in a band. They hung around with each other a lot and as a result she was listening to things that the rest of our hip-hop obsessesd class couldn't be bothered with, but which blew my mind. She's the one who introduced me to Sonic Youth and Belly, to Weetzie Bat and countless other things. She was always into her own thing, never giving a shit what anyone thought of her, and was sweet and generous as the day is long. She is one of my few good memories of a time that was bleak at best, and at worst fodder for post-traumatic stress. We tried to keep in touch for awhile, but we just drifted apart, as it happends. I was amazed and delighted to see her. And she me, if the chest-crushing hug was any indication. ;)

She's doing really well, and is currently teaching extremely disabled kids up in Harlem and finishing her master's to do that at Hunter. And she loves it. She talked about how fulfilling and fantastic it was, but her whole being just lit up when she talked about 'her kids.' Which is great. I'm hoping to hang out with her again very soon. Imagine that - nice people with a brain are starting to appear in Marine Park. Any doubts about that apocalypse should now be erased.

And before I forget, the incomparable Dar Williams is going to be at Bowery Ballroom December 3. Have not decided if I want to go yet, especially since I'm going to see BNL with [livejournal.com profile] quasisonic& [livejournal.com profile] laughingirl on the 6th and really have to watch my money this time of year. Still, I could be convinced to go to Dar very easily. Hmmm....

This picture in [livejournal.com profile] tacologic's journal has been cracking me up all morning. Particularly when I need it most. Thanks to him for posting it!
