Wow...who needs therapy when you have bellydancing? I mean it! I was sort of in a low place this weekend (some of you know why) and three things kept me from losing my mind:

*the copy of Sex & the City: the Complete Fifth Season that missgyderGyda & Michelle gave me for my birthday. (To say that season resonates with my current situation would be a major understatement. That, and while watching the first episode, I was reminded of the Sex & the City party in which I first met Michelle and got to know Gyda so much better, and there's nothing like remembering what incredible friends that you do have. Also, I really need a Carrie icon already).

* dinner saturday night with [livejournal.com profile] angelicillusion. *hugs* Love you babe!!!

* and BELLYDANCING class this afternoon.

Yes, you read that right. My dear darling sister dragged me out of the house nearly kicking and screaming to try this class at her Y that she had signed up for. I was dubious, but I knew I needed to get out before I lost my mind, and it was the BEST thing that I could have done. I paid for one session so I could try out the class, and I just loved it. Our instructor was great - really fun and positive - and just all of the moving around and dancing just did amazing things for my mood (as well as improving more visible areas as well, based on how sore I am - this is something that's going to be working all of my problem areas in a really fun way).

After learning a few very basic moves in the first class, I have a feeling I'm going to learn a lot of really great moves to bust out on the dance floor. Just don't ask me to do any in the next few days, as I am very, very sore. Even after a VERY hot bath (with a marvelous Hot Java bath ballistic, Scarlett's Walk and some candles) and some aspirin, I'm still not up to it. omg ow.

I also watched A Mighty Wind tonight, after [livejournal.com profile] quasisonic and I gave up on the horrendous, contrived, cliche-ridden trainwreck that was Celeste in the City (oh, the things we will do for Nicky Brendon and Ethan Embry...), and all I have to say is ahahhaaaahhahaahahaha heee hee hahahahahahah!! Brilliant. I know that I'm really late to the party on this one, but Eugene Levy usually annoys the crap out of me (at least he did in the American Pie movies), so I didn't see it when it first came out. But after hearing "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" at the Oscars, I was curious, and taped the movie last night on HBO. I definitely think that it's the best song in the movie, and that Catherine O'Hara has a really pretty voice.

Perhaps if it was less late and I was less tired I'd start ranting about these hackneyed, poorly conceived films written and directed by people who have never been to New York (or had been that one time and just HATED the place) for people of the same opinion. It makes you truly appreciate the films and shows (few and far between though they may be) that actually get it. Shows like Law & Order (the original) and Sex & the City are in that category. They're shot in New York with New York actors and written by New York writers. You can't fake that sort of thing, and when you try, well, it's about as pleasant as out of tune violin accompanied by whatever you consider to be the most annoying sound in the world. It's actually painful. Things like Friends or Felicity or even NYPD Blue get away with the NY setting because the city itself is really not the centerpiece, the characters are. I don't know how Will & Grace manages to get so much right, but I'm guessing it comes from the writing, and having the city be a recurring character, and not a main one (the way it is on SATC). There's an accuracy that you just can't fake.

The other day on [livejournal.com profile] nycnobody some girl posted about wanting to find a dress that was "very new york." I was mystified, so I responded, asking her what in the hell she was getting at. She basically responded with more of the same, that she was going to a fancy party and wanted a "New York Look." Perhaps it comes from growing up here, but I haven't the faintest idea what a "New York look" is. I know what sophisticated is, or sexy, or classic, or vintage, or retro is. I can make guesses at urban or downtown chic. But when people who aren't from here go on about the "New York look" or call something "very New York," it's like they're speaking to me in a foreign language. I just don't get it.

(well, nothing wrong with a mini-rant I suppose. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to haul my sore bones to bed. Goodnight!)

yippee

Glad to hear that you like bellydancing. It does sound like fun!

I know exactly what you mean about "The New York look" thing. I hate it when prissy girls from New Jersey gush about how "Euro" shit is.

It IS fun! And one ass-kicking workout! Belly dancers need to be curvy (you need something to shake) but your muscles need to be in tip top shape.

I got a few really cool friends who are from Jersey, and they've never said that. But I remember overhearing that shit up in Albany, too - people calling something "Euro." I mean, wtf? Are they trying to say that it's money?

The fuck is a "New York look"? Perhaps it's because I'm from NY or maybe because I'm a snob when it comes to fashion but ... NY doesn't have look per say does it? I mean that's why we ARE NY because we can't be urm defined I suppose? There's so many different looks floating around the city streets all you have to do is pick one ...

PS - I had fun this weekend too. We're never going back to KPD ever again ;)

Maybe its like the accent thing, everyone thinks we have these accents we don't really hear!

So maybe we all have some sort of similar aspect to our style we can't see? o_o

*snickers*

....nah, they're just silly!

LOL...other than pulled together with a general aversion to tacky floral prints, I'm not sure about some 'secret style.'

Ask Celeste!! *snicker*

Seriously!!! I mean, is it ultra-sophisticated with lots of black? Is it hip-hop? Is it very bohemian? Is it hipster? I mean, wtf?

(also, can I pretty pretty please steal your Carrie icon?? PWEASE?? *puppy dog eyes* )

P.S. - Never ever ever! But I think we should try La Villa next time, or even *gasp* branch out and try going out somewhere cool and funky in Bay Ridge, if you're up for it.

;) I don't mind. Just be sure to credit the icon maker bc I didn't make the icon.

I'd love to go to any of those places - we would just need to find the optimal time right before the weekend dinner rush happens :)

Yes, my new LJ friend [livejournal.com profile] saava did. I also grabbed the "Single Life" one. eee! :)

Yes. I can figure it out. Probably if we aimed to GET THERE at 6 (instead of, yanno, leaving at 6) we might be in good shape.

And there are always reservations...

Yay for Bellydancing!

It's so much fun, and it really is great exercise. Performing is even more fun if you get the right group.

So glad you had a good time!

Well, I'm not up to performing just yet. But I have no doubt that it's fun - I've seen the outfits!! :D

Thanks! I actually thought about you when I was posting this - I was pretty sure you'd be pleased to know I was a new fan of this awesome art (I'll try not to be an annoying convert!). :)

Bellydancers are considered newbies until they've been dancing for two years, so I guess I'm sort-of an annoying convert myself, since I've only been doing it for about five months.

Did the instructor have coin scarves for you to wear? Those are great fun.

No, no coin scarves, yet. It was only the first class. I'd love to try one of those, though. :)

I guess Anajahela spoiled us. She brings all her scarves to every class, so we got to use coin scarves from the first day. They're really good when you're first starting because when you tie them on the hip-line, you can see whether you're doing the move properly. And when you're doing upper-body isolations, you can tell whether you're doing the move properly because your coins shouldn't jingle.

And most of them are sparkly and pretty! Which is really the whole point!

Okay, I'll stop now. :)

That sounds like both a lot of fun and a great learning tool - but I think that might be just beyond my teacher's patience - all of those tinkling coins out of sync is enough to drive anyone round the bend.

And confidentially, I never felt more pity for the stick-skinny girls in my class in my life! They have nothing to shake!! Nothing!!

Amen to that! Most of the stick-skinny girls disappeared from our class after a couple of weeks.

And that's another thing I love about bellydancing, it's better if you have stuff to shake!

I was watching a couple of them in the mirror! They may have the imagined ideal of a figure, but they have no rhythm! No shake! It was sad trying to watch them shimmy and having nothing to shimmy. Really. There was no schadenfreude AT ALL. *innocent look*

lol I was wondering what exactly that meant when I saw that post too. :) It seems that this girl has a definate style in mind, in which case, she doesn't need to ask, she should just go out and find it. New York style... I know what a New York style cheesecake is. :) But not a style of clothing...

Seriously!! I know about NY-style pizza, cheesecake, bagels, coffee - but style? I haven't a clue! :)
