My Mp3 player is kaput.

Yes, my Dell non-ipod has finally gone to the great charger in the sky.   The unit still plays, but the volume is busted.  I shut it off at a normal volume.  Of its own volition, it keeps getting louder, and the button that lowers the volume is stuck and unusable (currently, the volume level is between ear-splitting and ear-bleeding).  It's off warranty, two years old, completely obsolete, and I was planning on replacing it with a real ipod anyway, just not quite so soon.

This thing almost qualifies as a necessity.  I take it everywhere with me.  If I leave the house, it's rare I don't have it in my bag.  After work, I plug in and the whole day washes away. It keeps out subway noises and the sounds of annoying people that I wish to ignore.   Sometimes it takes walks with me at lunchtime, and it cheers me on at the gym.  What's more, I don't have a car, and the subway is much easier to take with headphones than without them.  Of my material possessions, it's one of my very favorite things.    I've had a personal music device since I swiped my mom's walkman at the age of 5, and was given my own that Christmas.   I've always had something with me.  I lugged around a discman and a huge wallet full of cds until I finally caved and got the mp3 player, and I was instantly hooked.  The ability to have that many songs and combinations of songs at my disposal in one teeny tiny unit was like a dream come true.

So you can imagine the level of not pleased I am right now.

I'm probably going to suck it up and order one tomorrow or Friday (we get a discount on Apple products here at work, and free shipping, which helps a little).   And it'll be a shiny new video ipod, so anyone who can recommend a converter and ways to make the transition from the 21st century versions of Beta to VHS, I'd appreciate it.

I was going to have it engraved with the quote from Fight Club that says "We spend our lives working jobs we hate to buy shit we don't need," but I ran out of room.   Suggestions for an alternative engraving are welcome.

Also, here's a poll, since I'm curious:

[Poll #803677]

Despite that annoyance, I wound up having a lovely evening last night.  Puck had to work overnight, poor thing, so [livejournal.com profile] quasisonic asked me if I wanted to go and see Little Miss Sunshine with her, especially since neither of us could remember the last time we saw a movie together.   The movie was cute and pretty funny, but spending time with her was awesome, and I hope we can do this again soon.

I'm not surprised 100% of the responses to this poll have chosen the first answer. We need a way to drown out the world, after all...

I just replaced my own iPod today after almost three years of use--the battery refuses to hold a charge any longer, and it's just so old that I want to put it out to pasture (on eBay). I opted for the black 30 GB model, and went with a refurbished one at the suggestion of a co-worker who was delighted with his refurbed nano. Plus it was $60 cheaper.

*nod* Of course, I didn't get this comment until *after* I ordered a new one, but at least through work a new one is $25 cheaper.

(And you'll appreciate this - when I picked mine out I kept thinking "60 B!!!" over and over again in my head.)

P.S. That would have been awesome iPod engraving; shame it didn't fit. Maybe you could just engrave it with "unique snowflake"? Which I think would be especially nice if it's a white iPod.

hee! I actually wound up getting a black one, and I was going to put "I am Jack's ipod" on it, but instead decided on "I am Sharon's favorite toy," so it's more personalized, and a wee bit subtler.

But I would have LOVED to have that quote on there, though.

In-jokes are fun -- even if they're just with yourself :)

You are not wrong. Especially in light of this film...
