There may yet come a day when I don't respond to someone's declaration of

"Brr! It's cold in here!"

with

"There must be some Clovers in the at-mos-phere!"

But that's not a day I look forward to.

Two points I'm pondering:

1. Would anyone outside of Britain give a crap about Guy Fawkes' Day if not for Alan Moore?

2. Will the writers get what they deserve? I hope so. They produce the content that keeps me me fangirling, and they deserve better percentages of sales. That much I agree with. Maybe I'll post something longer in Teacup later. Usually strikes piss me off, but I'm finding myself supporting this one.

I'm with you on the strike thing. I really do hope they get a better shakeout thanks to this ... the media landscape is a-changin', and the writers deserve better compensation as a result.

Totally. Pulling ideas out of the air and making them interesting or funny is extremely difficult, especially when you have to do it on a daily basis. They deserve to be better compensated for it.

And when, suddenly, you're turning out ideas for multiple media - you're writing for your show AND for online mini-episodes AND other online content - you deserve to be compensated for all of that. Not just the TV stuff. Media changes, and they're demanding that the writers change with it ... but not offering to compensate them for it. Not cool, in my book.

And, of course, I'm especially interested in all this on the basis of "someday I'd love to be a WGA member and maybe do some screenwriting work, so let's hope they get a better deal before I get there..."

Nor mine. If they have to do the work, they should get paid for it. Not only that, if the show is going to be earning money from Internet sales and dvd sales, and not compensating the writers for it, that's just Not Cool.

(and ditto on the WGA thing. Oh, man, ditto.)

Exactly. I mean, this is where I give major points to the South Park guys for negotiating an internet clause into their contracts...

I'm with you on point number two. It's possible that I'm biased, being an actor's kid, but it's really crazy how much of a share the producers get given the minimal creative work they do. I'm also curious about two things: 1) how and whether the Teamsters will support this, and 2) what the repercussions/rewards will ultimately be for SAG & DGA members. Interesting times.

Exactly. I could see the creator of a show getting a larger share, especially if they're actively involved in the day-to-day (like Whedon or Kripke), but why a producer deserves that large share when no one is even sure what a producer does is as incomprehnsible to me as Bandom.

Me too! I suppose time will only tell. Do you know if SAG and DGA contemplating a sympathy strike? I haven't heard anything, and I kind of doubt it, but I'm still curious.

I'm also wondering whether AFTRA will get in on the action. It seems to me that they've got a pretty large stake in this themselves...

BWAHAHA!

Not to my knowledge, but they've commented that the resolution of the WGA strike will have resonance for their contracts.

(I mean really. The guys are not cute. The music is awful. The boat is gone, and I am not on it.)

They may also be biding their time. Who knows - this is only Day 1, after all.

1. Would anyone outside of Britain give a crap about Guy Fawkes' Day if not for Frank Miller?

Psst. I think you mean Alan Moore. ;)

(And I learned of it from Daria, thankyouverymuch!)

Ugh. I always, always mix those two up! Damnit.

I thought about mentioning Daria, but did anyone mention the poem in Daria? I know Guy Fawkes was one of the funniest characters in a really funny episode, but people weren't going around quoting "Remember remember" after it was on, no?

No, I don't think they mentioned the poem.

However, I will count Daria as where I learned about the poem, because a friend I met through Daria fandom was the person who taught it to me.

Okay, point. Although you have to admit that there's been a lot more references to November 5 since the release of the V movie.

Although, I have to admit being a tiny bit envious. I know we have the 4th of July, but I'm all in favor of holidays involving fireworks and bonfires.

Me too. This seems like it's not terribly unreasonable and you KNOW that the studios play massive games with the accounting.

Exactly. This is a case of the people who do the lion's share of the work asking for adequate compensation for the fat assholes who are sitting on the money yet doing little.

(that, and Joss turned me into a fangirl for tv writers. ::nod::)

While I agree with both of your later points, I comment primarily because:
OMG, I have the very same automatic, Bring-It-On response every time anyone says that! And people say it a lot...
