Waking up at 7:30 on a Sunday due to a coughing fit is usually the fast way to make me uber cranky.

However.

I realize now that the REASON I was up so early was to catch a broadcast of "Dyker Lights," the greatest holiday special in the history of holiday specials. Running 30 minutes in length, DL tells the stories of the residents of Brooklyn's famed 84th street, and their quest to put up the most ostentatious display. There's also a slightly incomprehensible side plot involving Staten Island, which I suppose isn't too incomprehensible, considering the proximity of the two places (it's just 20 minutes across the bridge, give or take, depending on traffic).

Combining high-quality camcorder footage with interviews and a couple of musical montages, Dyker Lights is a wonderful example of a particular kind of Christmas spirit. And it's the kind of Christmas spirit that inspires a grandpa to dance in the driveway to Dominic the Donkey as well as a complicated dance team performance to KTU techno (complete with plastic candy canes!!)

One of my favorite moments in the show has to be one guy discussing the different slogans for his Jewelry store.
"This? [gestures to the diamond ring decal on the back of his leather jacket] Oh, this is from my store. We got Rock Her, and we got Watch him. You know, with a watch? Heh. We also had 'Chain Her,' to exhibit our over a thousand varieties of chains, but some womens groups complained about that one. Not that I really give a damn or anything."

This guy, and the dude on the ladder at the beginning? Were all I needed to put a smile on my face.

Dyker Lights will air again:

Channel 21: 12/24 at 3 and 7:30
and Channel 13 12/24 at 5.

If you are in the New York City area, and have a tv, I highly recommend this. Dear God, the lulz. The first time my mother and I watched it together, we were laughing so hard we had to hold on to each other to keep from falling off of the couch. Or maybe I just had to hold on to her. Either way, this is a show that puts the "special" in Christmas Special. Don't miss it!

I remember seeing this once before I think - the jewelery story guy has his shop in Staten Island I think and his daughter has Thalassemia? Would this be that documentary?
