I don't want to work itis is hitting me hard today. I'll start fighting it harder in a minute, but I wanted to post first, since it's been awhile.
This past weekend was pretty crazy, so I didn't get a chance to update much. I will say that Saturday's
newyorkers meetup at the Brooklyn Museum was a total highlight, as was spending time with
leahpia77,
dkellergrl, and of course, the one and only
nemesisbecoming (and her lovely son Ziggy - but more on him in a minute).
I'm kind of annoyed with what's going on with the Brooklyn Museum at the moment - a lot of galleries are closed off. I know they're turning half of the third floor into some kind of Feminist Art permanent installation thingie, but it doesn't explain why everything else feels so abbreviated. They have a great collection of paintings from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, and I felt like a mere fraction of them were on display. I did like the fact that there was a storage unit on either the 4th or 5th floor that you could walk through and see things, but I'd like it more if the things were on display.
The first night event was a lot of fun, though. It was Caribbean themed, so there were Jerk Chicken wings and Jamaican beef patties in the cafeteria, lots of bands performing and even some people in costume (no doubt gearing up for the MASSIVE Caribbean day parade that takes over a big chunk of downtown Brooklyn every labor day weekend), and just music, music everywhere.
After grabbing a snack of the aforementioned treats, we headed out to the sculpture garden/patio to listen to some great Cuban jazz band that was playing a set. Lots of people were dancing, by themselves (like this crazy woman who brought her own butterfly tambourine!) and with each other, so we decided to join in. So much fun!
nemesisbecoming was dancing with her son (who's about 13 now), and L, D and I were just dancing in sort of a line, when this CREEPY guy came up behind me and started dancing near me. He wouldn't take a hint, either. Luckily, Nem sent Ziggy to run interference for me, and I danced with him a little bit, which worked! Zig is a really great kid, and I have a feeling that he's going to be an equally great adult.
After the band, we managed to ditch creepy guy in the parking lot where the DJ had set up and started playing raggae/dancehall/whatever it was she called it all. She played stuff that I remember from back in the day, too - like "Murder, She Wrote" and the original "Rich Girl," and stuff I don't even remember the names of, but I remember from various jhs dances (party like its 1993!). Ziggy then had to protect me from ANOTHER creepy guy (worse than mosquitos, I swear), before I had to say goodbye and head out to
dujrock's bday for a bit.
Sunday I went grocery shopping, cleaned, and watched The Family Stone, which I can't recommend enough. The trailers didn't really do a decent job of capturing the film, but it was a lot smarter, funnier, and warmer than it appeared to be, and had marvelously rich characters (I thought). So I have another Christmas movie to add to my collection of things that must be watched every holiday, like Love Actually, Reindeer Games, and Die Hard (a family tradition).
I also should mention that I got to hang out with the wonderful
unsimilar on Friday and we watched the remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I enjoyed it very much, and tried to watch an episode of House after that as well, but I'm an old woman, so after two glasses of wine staying awake was more than I could stand. Still, it was fun, and I can't wait until it's cool enough out to entertain people in the living room again. Hanging out in my room like that is nice, but feels rather 7th grade at times.
Tonight
damiella and I are going to a book industry party that Mediabistro is running, so that should at least be amusing. And then, as of 12:45 on Friday, I will be on VACATION for another week. :)

The Family Stone
Date: 2006-08-09 02:41 pm (UTC)I'm glad that I know someone who enjoyed the film, because I'm so glad that I didn't pay the full price to see it in the theaters.
I also saw another holiday themed film this weekend called, Last Holiday with Queen Latifah. Now, that was an entertaining holiday film.
Re: The Family Stone
Date: 2006-08-09 02:53 pm (UTC)What I got from the film was that SJP's character was very tightly wound and stuck up, and a bit cold - she's not someone comfortable in her own skin, so when she encounters the extremely down-to-earth Stone clan, she's totally out of her element. She begins overcompensating for it, rather than just trying to go with the flow, and then it leads to one disaster after another. I got the feeling that her sister was used to her very high-maitenance behavior, which is why she came to help her (part of me feels like SJP's character should have been the younger one and CD should have been the older one, but that's just me). As for why the youngest Stone sister hated SJP - I think they had a very bad first impression of one another and that colored things, plus, I think the youngest sister realized towards the end that she was bitter about things unfairly and that was coloring her judgement.
I have a weakness for big, crazy, loving families (like in this movie), which is why it appealed to me. I do want to see Last Holiday, though - it's a fun premise.
Also, you *might* like In Her Shoes, if you haven't seen it yet.

Date: 2006-08-09 03:07 pm (UTC)I saw that a couple of months ago and I did enjoy the film. I'm just tired of Toni Collette always playing the "dowdy one" in films. I think she's fabulous and I wish that filmmakers would give her roles, in which she's portraying a character that's full of life: aka Velvet Goldmine.
